Synopsis: The Jews of Europe were often referred to as Shylocks. This word that once described a man utterly void of human decency in Shakespeare's famed play the Merchant of Venice became the grim definition of an entire people. They may have lived in the same cities as their gentile counterparts but their multitude of differences were scrutinized by neighbors, coworkers and fellow citizens. Had they lived a smaller existence...had they not made their presence so obvious, the reaction may have been different, but as history would show, it would only be a matter of time before the European Jewish infestation was eradicated. The Abrahms family immigrated to America with a wave of other Jewish immigrants in the early part of the twentieth century. Like their fellow immigrants, they brought with them a legacy of persecution, exile and punishment. Unlike their fellow immigrants, they didn’t bring a defeatist attitude, a predisposition to being the victim or even the slightest submissiveness to the powers that dominated their world. Instead they brought with them a predatory sense for survival...so fierce it would destroy anything or anyone that got in the way. Mickey Fox represents the third generation of the Abrahms family. In the late eighties, he was indicted for 42 violations of the RICO statute. The F.B.I. claimed to have evidence linking him to criminal activity in New York, Miami, Chicago, Cleveland, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. They believed he used the family business, a small pawnshop on the Lower East Side, to broker deals between New York’s most successful businessmen, public officials, law enforcement agents and the mob. It was suspected that Mickey had ties to the highest levels of organized crime and he could single handedly bring down an organization that the F.B.I. themselves didn’t fully understand. As a result, Mickey would become the target of an investigation and eventually a manhunt that would bring light to the Abrahms family business. This is the story of Mickey Fox but more importantly it’s the story of how a history of persecution and exile shape the psyche of this family, how their choice to isolate themselves from the rest of the world puts them more at risk and how their selective morality keeps generation after generation tied to the business of crime and corruption.
